Maddie’s path began with curiosity and a desire to help—but she didn’t know where to start. After coming across information about Harbour Hope’s volunteer training, she decided to attend. What she encountered there reshaped her understanding entirely. She learned that human trafficking isn’t rare, distant, or dramatic like in the movies—it’s a widespread, deeply rooted industry happening every day in our own communities.
Through training videos, survivor testimonies, and conversations with our team, Maddie felt God stirring something deeper. Once her eyes were opened to the truth, she knew she couldn’t turn away. One training video in particular struck her—it began like a typical business presentation, only to reveal that the “business” was human trafficking. That moment made the reality impossible to ignore.
As Maddie continued learning, reading Renting Lacy profoundly impacted her. The story stayed with her—revealing how exploitation can touch anyone, anywhere. Hearing directly from survivors and their families during training stirred her heart even more. Drawing from her own experience of sexual assault years earlier, Maddie recognized how God could redeem her pain and use it to help others feel understood and safe.
That’s when she knew this calling wasn’t accidental—it was purposeful.
Stepping into mentorship alongside her co-mentor, Tara, Maddie admits she was nervous at first. But those early uncertainties gave way to genuine relationships rooted in trust, growth, and faith. Over time, mentorship became mutual—the women she walked alongside taught her just as much as she offered them. Each meeting carried a sense of God’s presence, a quiet joy that confirmed she was exactly where she was meant to be.
